. if you haven't heard yet, this is news out there from nbc. nbc is reporting that the obama administration knew millions of people could not keep their health insurance. four sources who were deeply involved in the affordable care act tell nbc news that 50% to 75% of the 14 million consumers who buy their insurance individually can expect to receive a cancellation letter or equivalent over the next year. that's because their existing policies don't meet the standards mandated by the new health care law. one number predicts the number could reach as high at 18% for those new people. many will experience the sticker shock. the white house is pushing back on this report. a white house press equity is tweeting that the nbc scoop, in parentheses sites normal turnover in the individual insurance market that's a, new new, b, not caused by the aca, and c, the problem aca will solve. lisa myers broke this story and will join us at 7:00 eastern with more. >> that is misleading, the response to it. because they were going to grandfather initially people that were in certain plans and then the rules w

. first to eamon javers in washington to explain how we got here. >> hi, tyler. the obama administration sees this one as a big win this week. remember that fiscal cliff deal that we had at the end of last year's crisis in washington? what they did was, they raised taxes, and they cut spending through the sequester. and that's had a fairly predictable result. it's been good for the deficit. take a look at this chart, and you'll see the deficit as a percent of gdp has gone down dramatically since 2009 when it was 9.2%. 2013, just 4.1%. 79% of the decrease the government says it due to tax receipts. record tax receipts in 2013, up $325 billion from 2012. that's up 13%. so the tax man is getting his cut of this improving economy and also as a result of those tax increases. that has led to this lowering of the u.s. deficit. that's something the obama administration says is a good thing. they feel like, you know, it's not getting enough attention here in all of this hullabaloo here in washington. >> a quick follow-up question if i might that kayla tausche raised. and that is all of the money

'm erin burnett. out front tonight. breaking news under pressure. the obama administration has just authorized the release of more details about the american government's collection of telephone data. the director of national intelligence, james clapper just said this in a statement. their declassification is not done lightly. i have determined, however, that the harm to national security from the release of these documents is outweighed by the public interest. now clapper and other officials are all going to be testifying in detail about this program on capitol hill tomorrow. the white house, though, so far has begged ignorance. but what exactly is the president's role? here's what we know. now hear me out here. a u.s. official tells cnn tonight that president obama was briefed on u.s. spying program, including the one that targeted world leaders when he took over the white house from president george w. bush. they say he also would have been told which countries were being targeted in those brifings, but then senior official still insists to cnn that president obama didn't learn u

surrounding the website the obama administration officially granted a six week extension for shoppers to sign up for coverage next year. you now have until march 31st to do so. course correction of the roll out of obama care may be the least of the white house's problems. for years president obama denied that the affordable care act would change health care coverage for millions of americans. in fact it was a key component of the president's sales pitch to the public. >> if you like your health care plan you keep your health care plan. these folks need to stop scaring everybody. nobody will force you to leave your health care plan. i don't want government bureaucrats meddling in your health care. your employer provides you health insurance on the job, nobody is talking about messing with that. if you're one of the more than 250 million americans who already have health insurance, you will keep your health insurance. >> but now an nbc news report finds the opposite happens to be true. buried in a document from 2010 of obama care regulations, lisa myers discovered the white house officials were
